Lyrics meaning
The lyrics portray a speaker who recognizes a sinister figure and then chooses to bargain with him. At first, the figure seems associated with loneliness and evil; later, the speaker openly asks for wealth and fame. The mood shifts from wary observation to determined, almost defiant acceptance of the cost.
“Sell my soul” is an expression for giving up something deeply important in exchange for success or riches. “Diamonds” suggest extravagant wealth, while “no crown of thorns” contrasts worldly comfort with suffering and sacrifice. The repeated image of seeing the figure’s face and smile, followed by “Time to die,” can sound like a warning or a grim announcement of what the bargain will bring.
The speaker says he does not care about heaven and accepts burning in hell, which makes his choice seem deliberate rather than innocent. Still, the lyrics leave room for uncertainty: this may be a literal pact with the Devil, or a dramatic way to describe ambition and the willingness to face terrible consequences for material rewards. The repeated refrain gives the song a fatalistic feeling, as if the outcome is already closing in.
