Venus as a Boy

The lyrics portray a person who is both playful and sensual, and who pays close attention to a woman’s pleasure. The repeated belief in beauty gives the song an admiring, almost dreamy feeling. Its mood is intimate, but not simply lustful: tenderness and appreciation are important alongside sexual excitement.

“Venus as a boy” is a striking image. It may suggest that this man embodies beauty or sensuality, while also playing with the contrast between the traditionally feminine name Venus and “boy.” His focused fingers and careful exploration of her taste make intimacy sound attentive rather than hurried. When he “sets off the beauty in her,” the phrase can mean that he brings out her confidence or makes her feel desirable.

The ending shifts toward a voice asking to “melt,” but also to be understood and challenged. This could express surrender and emotional openness, alongside a wish for excitement or engagement. The lyrics leave unclear who is speaking at that point, and the Icelandic lines do not have an obvious meaning from the surrounding English alone. That uncertainty adds to the song’s sensual, impressionistic quality.
