They say he oversang it
And that he didn't understand the words
Was he a heavy drinker or just a fool to do their dirty work?
You don't have to be clever, but to reach out you need a little heart
And David had a voice not even Fagen could outsmart
Me, I like The Dan as much as any other guy
But the absence of David, was a knot they never could untie
And though I might disagree with a bunch of major dudes
I find them easier to admire than to listen to
And it's so easy to underestimate a pretty voice
All this useless beauty, come on let's go and make some noise!
But even Nash Kato had a go at Dirty Work
And though he overkilled it, he did it note by note, word by word
So, if you come across it, a voice that makes you want to cry
Could be someone like David, could be voice like mine
Remember every singer is born with an achilles heel
We don't care about the song itself, just how it makes you feel
