Lyrics meaning
The speaker addresses Marie as someone who might offer comfort while he suffers and faces danger. At first, he longs to rest in her arms and sees her as his “last chance,” but she seems to be disappearing despite his efforts. The mood grows darker: he describes a violent world, confusion, and an approaching battle. By the end, he appears to accept that he may die and imagines meeting Marie again in heaven.
The “front” and “first line” suggest soldiers going into battle, while the “shadows” killing one another convey a frightening, unclear scene of violence. “I’ve seen more horrors than wonders” contrasts terrible experiences with the good things life can offer. Death is also described as promising a “vacation” and a “last dance.” These phrases make death sound strangely inviting, perhaps because the speaker is exhausted and wants escape.
Marie may be a loved person, a source of hope, or a figure associated with spiritual comfort; the lyrics do not explain who she is. The scene of waking in the grass could be literal, or it might blur a battlefield experience with a dreamlike vision. The ending sounds peaceful, but it is also sorrowful: the speaker’s hope of reunion depends on his death.
