The speaker compares three kinds of effort and success: a cyclist battling the wind, a footballer winning before a crowd, and a businessman defeating a rival. Then the focus shifts to a quiet moment with a child on the speaker’s lap. This simple contentment feels more valuable than public achievement or competition. The mood is affectionate, but also protective and slightly comic as the speaker imagines the child’s possible future.

The cyclist “making a way” against the wind suggests persistence through difficulty. The footballer who “imagines himself a champion” may be enjoying victory, while the businessman’s success is presented as harsh and morally troubling. “A board in front of his head” is an image of narrow-mindedness: the businessman seems unable or unwilling to see beyond his own interests. The speaker jokes that football might get the child badly hurt, yet considers it preferable to becoming like that businessman.

The repeated preference for football over business makes the speaker’s values clear, but the song does not offer a simple ideal. Sport is physically dangerous, while business success is depicted as damaging to character. The warm scene with the child suggests that care and ordinary happiness matter most, though the speaker’s worries about the child’s future remain playful rather than certain.
