From Here to Eternity

The speaker remembers a promise of lasting love, but the relationship has ended. The lyrics move from confidence in that promise to shock and loneliness: a kiss that seemed loving is understood afterward as a farewell. Even so, the speaker’s feelings remain strong. The mood is sad and yearning, with a small sense of persistence in the closing lines.

“From here to eternity” is an expression of forever, making the promise sound absolute. Its repetition at the end suggests that the love continues in the speaker’s heart, even though the beloved is gone. “My empty arms” is an image of missing someone’s physical presence; it also conveys emotional emptiness. The kiss “meant goodbye” gives a tender gesture a painful, hidden meaning.

The lyrics leave the reason for the departure unclear. “Will never know why” may mean the speaker has received no explanation, or simply cannot understand how love turned into separation. The ending is therefore mixed: the speaker may find comfort in keeping the love alive, but “endless desire” also suggests ongoing pain. Eternity describes the feeling, not necessarily a lasting relationship.
