Blue Condition

The lyrics describe a person caught in a bleak, repetitive state of mind. They warn against going through life without reflecting on what is true, suggesting that a person’s own judgments may help create their sadness. The repeated lines about having no rest, conversation, or change make the mood feel stuck and isolating. The advice to rise early and be enterprising offers a small push toward action, but the song does not promise that effort will quickly improve things.

“Wrong direction” suggests making choices that lead away from understanding or well-being. “Deep blue” connects the color blue with sadness, while “all the way through” makes that sadness sound constant, as if it colors the person’s whole experience. The lack of “variation” also implies that days have become monotonous, with little to interrupt the gloom.

The song can be read as encouragement to examine one’s thinking and make an effort, rather than simply accepting despair. At the same time, its repeated, nearly unchanging refrain may suggest how difficult it is to escape a low mood. The lyrics do not explain exactly what caused the condition, or whether the speaker is addressing someone else or themselves, so the advice and the expression of distress remain intertwined.
