Lyrics meaning

The lyrics move from darkness, suffering, and apparent hopelessness toward comfort and promised relief. The repeated reassurance that someone is coming suggests faith in a future rescue, while the repeated image of the cross makes endurance feel central to that hope. Yet the song does not claim that hardship has already ended: people still face hunger, poverty, and personal problems.

Several images sharpen this contrast. โ€œBlack day, stormy nightโ€ presents despair as a dark, unsettled landscape. Ghettos on one side and flowers on the other place hardship beside beauty or possibility; โ€œbread for allโ€ suggests basic needs being met and shared. The pregnant mother who sings a song of salvation while starving is a particularly poignant image: she offers hope even as she struggles to provide for her children. โ€œBear the crossโ€ can mean enduring suffering, and it also points toward Christian ideas of the cross as a source of salvation.

The song can be heard as a religious promise that suffering will eventually be taken away, but the lyrics leave some questions open. โ€œHe is comingโ€ may refer to a divine figure, though the words do not name him. The cross may represent faith, a burden people must carry, or both. Its hopeful message is therefore not simply that life is easy, but that people may endure present pain through belief in relief to come.
