Budapest

The lyrics describe a touring group remembering a striking woman they met during a hot night in Budapest. The speaker is attracted to her and builds the encounter into a vivid memory, but the group eventually leaves to continue west. The mood shifts from playful excitement and sensual attention to distance and uncertainty: the woman remains memorable, yet the speaker realizes she may not have shared his interest or even been present in his later recollection.

Several images make the heat and attraction feel almost overwhelming. Saying her legs seemed to stretch “on forever” compares looking at them to gazing into infinity, an exaggerated way to express fascination. The “hot night” is more than weather: it suggests physical warmth, lively backstage energy, and desire. The image of cutting the heat with a knife makes the air seem thick and tangible, while her “heart” turning west hints that her thoughts or hopes were elsewhere.

The speaker’s account may be partly playful fantasy rather than a reliable portrait. He notices her body and imagines her significance, but also says she speaks little, declines to make love, and does practical work like making sandwiches and pouring wine. The ending suggests she has her own direction and does not care to become part of the group’s story. It is unclear whether the restaurant sighting is a mistaken memory or imagined scene; either way, the song leaves the encounter unresolved.
