The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago

The speaker describes a change from living with guilt and avoiding prayer to seeking God and feeling forgiven. The song’s repeated claim that the account was “settled long ago” gives it a confident, thankful mood: the speaker believes the burden has been dealt with, and urges listeners to seek the same peace.

The “old account” is a metaphor for the speaker’s record of sins, imagined as a debt that keeps growing. “The record’s clear” suggests that this debt has been erased, while being “down on my knees” implies prayer and humility. The lyrics also connect looking toward future “pain and woe” with deciding to face the problem rather than ignore it.

The song presents forgiveness through a specific religious belief: repentance and faith can bring relief from sin. Its confidence is clear, though listeners may understand the “account” differently—as a spiritual image, or more broadly as a way of describing guilt and the wish to make things right. The lyrics do not explore uncertainty; instead, their repeated refrain makes the speaker’s sense of assurance central.
