Lovely Rita

The lyrics present a playful story of a narrator becoming attracted to Rita, a woman who gives parking tickets. At first he notices her while she is working, then politely invites her for tea. Their evening seems to go well, but the narrator’s romantic confidence is mixed with comic uncertainty. The repeated praise of “Lovely Rita” makes the song feel light and teasing rather than deeply sentimental.

The parking meter and ticket book place Rita in an ordinary, practical job, while the narrator’s language turns the encounter into a flirtation. “Tow your heart away” plays on the idea of towing a car, suggesting that Rita could carry off his feelings. Her cap and shoulder bag make her look “a little like a military man,” a humorous comparison based on her uniform and brisk appearance. “Nearly made it” hints that the narrator hoped the evening would lead to romance, but the mention of her sisters suggests they were not alone.

The ending, “They’ll never believe it,” is deliberately open: it may refer to the narrator’s unlikely date with a meter maid, or simply express amusement at how the evening turned out. The lyrics do not tell us how Rita feels, so the story is mostly filtered through the narrator’s playful perspective.
