The song "Help My Unbelief" comes from a powerful story in the
Gospel of Mark, chapter 9. A desperate father whose son needs
Healing finds out that Jesus is coming to his town. Like most
Any dad, he'll do anything to get in front of Jesus, to have a
Moment that maybe, just maybe, Jesus would touch his son and heal
Him. Well, he gets his chance. One translation of the moment says
It like this: "The father, standing before Jesus, says, 'Have
Mercy on us and help us, if you can.' Jesus answered, 'What do
You mean, if I can? Anything is possible for those who believe.'"
Now this is the bumper sticker verse, right? "Anything is
Possible for those who believe." The one we'll put in a frame
That we'll put on the refrigerator. But it's what the father
Says next to me that is so compelling to me. He cries out, "
I do believe, but help my unbelief!" Wow. Who hasn't felt that
In life? That's real. That's all of us. And I would dare say
If you've never felt that, then you haven't lived long enough
You know what I love? Jesus didn't look at this dad who was
Struggling and say, "Well, you don't 100% believe, so I'm
Moving on. Who's next?" No, He heals the child. What mercy!
I'm grateful that this encounter is in the Scriptures. It gives me a
Lot of hope. It reminds me that we don't have to have it all together
To come to God. In fact, the Scripture also says that His strength is
Perfect when we are at our weakest. Not when we are strong, but when
We are weak, His strength and power
Is made perfect in us. What mercy!
