Penelope and the Succulent On a bright fall day, Penelope's mother told her "Penn, we're going to the nursery today." Penn wasn't sure what a nursery was She knew what nurses were People who worked at the doctor's office But nursery was new Penn and her mother rode the Andreadas Street car All the way to the ocean Penn stared out the window at the tall victorian houses And watched them blur by At the nursery, Penn's mother told her "If you find a small one you like, we'll bring it home" Penn wandered through dripping red fuschia And the bright upright delphiniums Through long shelves of tiny succulents waiting to be planted One caught her eye It was a yellow succulent whose tag read, "Sedum" She held it up but she could see sunshine through it "I want this one" Penn took her plant home, put it down on her table And stared at it She couldn't plant it, she didn't want to see it In the ground setting down roots before it had seen The whole house She walked it from the living room to the bathroom And even into the closet She put it down in the kitchen Oh, but it still wanted to go further She took it to the park, to the beach Into school, over the bridge, into the janitor's closet Into the science lab, to the gym, to the track Under the kitchen table, onto the fields And into each neighbor's garden She took that plant, well, everywhere And now she was running out of places to take him She had to find more secret places She took him to explore even more miniscule areas Like, into the sink, beneath the bed, inside of drawers Behind the couch, peeking into the cat's ear Inside of cups, through keyholes, between her toes Inside her mother's safe One day Penn woke up, her plant was gone She looked into the sink, inside the keyholes Between her toes, nowhere Sedum was nowhere She ran to her mother, "Where's my plant?" "I left on the table now it's gone." Penn's mother pointed to the back yard Penn ran out and saw it sitting there Was he ready to be planted? Had he seen everything? The yellow sedum sat in the sun, looking strong
