Bismarck

The lyrics present the battleship Bismarck as a powerful force setting out to sea, with the mood shifting from awe and confidence to violence and, finally, silence. Repeated claims that it will rule the waves make the ship seem almost invincible. Yet the closing image of its guns falling silent suggests that this power does not last.

The ship is called a “beast made of steel,” a metaphor that makes a human-built machine seem like a living creature. “King of the ocean” similarly gives it royal authority, while the storm and the “hunt” make the approaching battle feel threatening. “Iron and blood” suggests the harsh cost of war and the forces that bind the ship to its fate.

The lyrics mix admiration for the battleship’s size and military strength with images of destruction and defeat. Their repeated praise may sound triumphant, but the ending complicates that feeling: the celebrated ship lies at the bottom of the ocean. The song can therefore be read both as a dramatic portrait of military power and as a reminder that even an imposing war machine can be overcome.
