Heaven Is in the Back Seat of My Cadillac

The singer describes wanting privacy and physical closeness with someone he loves. Surrounded by people who stare, he feels uncomfortable and urges them to leave. The mood then becomes more relaxed and romantic as he imagines driving away from the city together.

“Heaven” is a metaphor for the intense pleasure and intimacy he expects to share in the car; it is not necessarily a religious claim. The “back seat” suggests a private place, while the countryside and moonlight create a quiet setting away from the bright city and curious onlookers. “Can’t stand it” means he finds the situation very hard to tolerate, and “let’s get outta here” is an informal way to say he wants to leave.

The lyrics present desire directly and enthusiastically, but the “heaven” image makes the experience sound emotionally meaningful as well as physical. The singer may be seeking a brief escape from public attention, not rejecting the city or other people more broadly. The song does not tell us what happens after the ride begins, so its focus is on anticipation and the wish for a private moment together.
