She Flies On Strange Wings

The lyrics describe a speaker’s loneliness and fascination with a mysterious woman who seems to bring beauty, love, and escape. At first, she appears generous and uplifting: her presence makes the world feel magical. Later, the speaker tries to follow her, but the mood darkens. His “mutilated wings” and the “blackness” suggest that he cannot easily share her freedom, and his longing may be pulling him into danger or disappointment.

The woman’s wings may represent independence, imagination, or a kind of freedom the speaker desires but cannot fully reach. Calling her feathers “untouched” suggests she remains unhurt or unpossessed, while the contrast with his damaged wings makes their difference clear. The repeated idea that she “takes but nothing and she gives so much” presents her as almost otherworldly: she offers comfort without seeming to demand anything in return. “From sky to sky” suggests a wish to leave ordinary life behind.

It is unclear whether the woman is a real person, an idealized lover, or a symbol of escape, such as a dream or altered state. The lyrics celebrate her power, but they also hint that following her may not be safe or possible. The speaker’s attraction is therefore both hopeful and uneasy: she seems to offer freedom, yet he approaches her from a place of loneliness and weakness.
