Any society where there is disorder, chaos, anarchy or a free-for-all
Attitude, that's certainly an evidence of poor or bad leadership
Power failure is a devourer of people's resources. It diminishes
Potentials. Constant power outages is a sign of systems failure or
Underdevelopment. It's a signature of poor or bad leadership. There
Hardly goes a day in Nigeria without protracted power outages
Sometimes one begins to wonder if the operators play pranks with the
System, as there can be up to about a dozen or more power outages in
A day. Anything goes in an unruly or lawless society under the grip
Of bad leadership. You can imagine what Nigerians go through day in
Day out, year in and year out. It irks one to even imagine that
Billions of dollars have purportedly been invested to revamp the
Power sector in Nigeria. Inefficiency and corruption has bedevilled
And strangulated the electricity sector for many decades. More often
Than not, lawlessness is the result of bad leadership. It is
Retrogressive because it is a state of chaos. Have you ever lived in
A society where lawlessness is the order of the day? A society where
No one seems safe and where anything can happen? A society ravaged by
Mass looting of government treasury, armed robbery, rape, car
Snatching, assassinations, reckless power outages, violence, murder
Dangerous driving particularly by our leaders or law enforcement
Agents, harassment by street beggars, bribery, prostitution, fighting
, Kidnapping, insecurity, warring militia groups, intimidation
Smuggling, illegal arrest and detention, fraudulent activities
Violent clashes between security agencies, narcotic trafficking
Barefaced disregard for court rulings? Several underdeveloped
Countries of the world like Nigeria fit the above description. The
Garrulous impunity and immoral sagacity of several African leaders to
Crush the truth, disregard the rule of law when it does not favour
Them, and to perpetuate injustice and political absurdity is indeed
Worrisome. It was William Bryant who once said that truth crushed to
Earth shall rise again. In Nigeria, all levels of government play a
Pivotal role in the development or the lack of it of the country
The hydra-headed problems within the geographical expression called
Nigeria are not primarily about corruption and indiscipline. The
Primary problem with Nigeria which is responsible for the dwarf level
Of development is due to lack of good managerial acumen by many
Nigerian political leaders to manage the challenges of the country
In Nigeria, aside military rule which spanned for about nineteen
Years, we have had more of civilian rule than democratic rule
Civilian rule reels out undemocratic culture that hardly produces
Good governance. Nigeria has unfortunately had more of rulers than
Leaders. The success of a nation or its people depends on the ability
Of the leaders to turn difficult situations around. Sadly, Nigeria
Is still a state and not yet a nation. After a hundred years of
Existence, Nigeria still exhibits the traits of a failing state as
She still crawls on her knees, although she is nicknamed the giant of
Africa. For one century, Nigeria has been at the bank of failure
Refusing to cross to the other side of success like Malaysia
Singapore and others. Why? Because Nigeria has been under the siege
Of poor or bad leadership since 1960. This is why many folks have
Come to the conclusion that Nigeria may be under a curse. A wealthy
Country bedevilled by bad leadership. Another major problem with
Nigeria is that Nigerians are generally not very courageous in
Taking their destinies in their own hands by resisting and ejecting
Perfidious leaders through the cast of their votes during elections
Not a few Nigerians sit back at home during elections and refuse
To vote for better leadership. They say Naija don jaga jaga, but
God dey sha. This is absolutely incredible. God dey sha dey make
Things dey spoil more and more everyday. When good people shay away
From leadership positions, bad people will take over, and then na
So-so jaga jaga things we go dey see because God dey sha. We have
No right to grumble howsoever about the results of leadership if
We do not play our own role during elections. Anyone who gives a
Bribe to influence a vote is an enemy of Nigeria's progress. Same
Thing for anyone who accepts a bribe to vote for any candidate. Don'
T be afraid to expose or embarrass any candidate who offers you a
Bribe or anyone who accepts a bribe to cast a vote for a candidate
You should vote for a candidate as your conscience dictates to you
Vote for competent people with raw evidence of high integrity
Courage, and good leadership abilities. Do not vote based on
Tribalism or sentiments. It is a fact that the myriad crisis in
Nigeria, such as terrorism, kidnappings, piracy, corruption
Unemployment, indiscipline, greed, and wickedness cannot evaporate
Overnight, even with the best of ideas. But we must all courageously
Strive to play a positive role in voicing out the problems of Nigeria
And proffering solutions to same. Millions of Nigerians are suffering
. Most Nigerians provide water for themselves, either by sinking their
Own boreholes or buying water. Nigerians provide about eighty-five
Percent electricity for themselves by burning fuel on private
Generators. Nigerians provide security for themselves through private
Guards or vigilante groups. Armed robbery and kidnapping have been on
The increase. Who will save the common man? I recall, in 1993, I had
A house in a remote part of Port Harcourt City of Rivers State. I was
Not afraid of armed robbers. I had two security guards, popularly
Referred to as "my guards." I armed them with bows and arrows, and I
Was very comfortable with that. But things have deteriorated over the
Years. Even traveling on our highways is so risky, as armed robbers
Often lay siege at strategic death-trap potholes on our highways. In
2007, I was among victims of an armed robbery attack between the
Cities of Warri and Benin in Southern Nigeria. The hoodlums suddenly
Came out of the bushes and opened fire on our vehicles, among others
Long story short, the robbers took over the wheels of our vehicle and
Others, and drove the vehicles into a thick forest where several
Passengers, including myself, were dispossessed of all our money and
Valuables. I was manhandled, while four young University of Benin
Ladies and students were raped repeatedly in the forest. The only
Lady that survived the rape ordeal escaped because she was in her
Monthly menstrual period. My friends, my goal here is to inspire
Every Nigerian to play a pivotal role in moving Nigeria forward, and
This will include demanding accountability from our leaders. I truly
Do not understand why our political leaders cannot account for their
Security votes that run into billions of Naira annually. It is most
Important to state that our judiciary has a key role to play in
Dispensing justice fairly and in good time. It is true that our
Judiciary has been polluted by rotten-egg judges who accept and give
Bribe to delay, frustrate, or abort justice. Leadership skills are
Not necessarily about one's degrees, qualifications, or titles. It is
About the will and the courage to serve the people with competence
And credibility. Most Nigerian political leaders have not been
Sincere about their goals to develop their sphere of influence within
Nigeria. They allow politics to negatively becloud their sense of
Judgement. Nigerian political leaders should muster the political
Will to combat indiscipline, injustice, and corruption. Bad
Leadership truncates the will of Nigerians for democratic governance
And here's what I think. I think that the so-called over-flogged war
Against corruption in Nigeria, for many years now, has been a joke
The demons behind corruption has held Nigerians captive. While they
Elevate those who make sacrifices on the altar of corruption, they
Debase millions of Nigerians through the instrument of corruption
Does it not amaze you how a public servant who is convicted for
Stealing billions of Naira is left off the hook with just a slap on
The wrist, but a person who steals a goat gets a five-year jail
Sentence? The abuse of fuel subsidy, the questionable and sometimes
Unjustifiable allocation of oil blocks to political jobbers, to
Fronts of political leaders, the unresolved aviation armoured car
Saga, armoured cars that were inflated by over a hundred and fifty
Million Naira. And then again, there is the allegation by the Central
Bank of Nigeria of a missing twenty billion dollars, which is
Purported to have been unaccounted for by the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. They all leave so much to be desired
The bloodbath in the Northeast and the North-Central parts of Nigeria
Is mind-boggling. A strange and new dimension has been introduced
By the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen, who leave a trail of blood
Tears, and devastation as they crisscross the country with ferocious
Brutality. They have left many Nigerians displaced, homeless
Without food, shelter, or medicine. And while we applaud the
Consistent condemnation of these criminal actions by our political
Leaders, we urge them to do far more to protect defenseless Nigerians
. Our leaders should be proactive, and our security forces should be
Far more ahead of these criminals. It is always too late to cry when
The head is off. Condemnation by government will not bring back the
Dead or instantly heal the bereaved families. Recently, a new group
Called Biafra Zionist Movement has evolved, claiming responsibility
For an attack on the Enugu State Government House. The insecurity
All across Nigeria has assumed a frightening state. And if our
Security forces cannot quell minor militant groups within Nigeria
How will they effectively defend our country against external
Aggression? Our political leaders must rise up now and fight
To defend the sovereignty of our country. They must prioritize
Economic strategies that will create job opportunities for
The unemployed. They must provide social services for all
Nigerians, services like regular power supply, good education
Housing, better healthcare, and security of lives and properties
There can never be development without security. Our leaders
Must fight corruption sincerely and promote justice and equity
