Never-Ending Story

The lyrics reflect on time, change, and human life as part of something much larger. Armies and kingdoms rise and disappear, and people too will eventually be forgotten. Yet the song offers a hopeful thought: our actions still matter, even when they do not bring lasting fame. The repeated questions about where the journey leads express uncertainty rather than giving a clear answer.

The Earth is called “our mother,” suggesting that nature provides for people but also takes things away. The image of kingdoms “buried by sand” makes history feel vulnerable and temporary. Describing life as a story or journey suggests that each person is one part of a continuing process, not its whole beginning or ending. “No one’s to stay” means that nobody can remain forever.

The story may be understood as human history, life on Earth, or existence more broadly; the lyrics leave its meaning open. Calling it sometimes beautiful and sometimes insane captures the contrast between wonder and disorder. Although no one remembers how the story began, the speaker does not treat that mystery as a reason for despair. Instead, the song balances acceptance of change with the belief that what we do has value.
