The lyrics describe a painful connection that has ended, or may need to end. The speaker feels distant from the other person and unable to understand them, yet the relationship still matters. The emotional movement is from confusion and hurt toward a firm boundary: the speaker cannot keep offering support, but cannot simply erase the past either.

Several images express this conflict. “Erasing the rivers I’m drawn in” suggests that the other person is wiping away paths or feelings that naturally pull the speaker toward them. “Crawling under your skin” usually means getting very close or affecting someone deeply; here, the speaker says the other person does not understand that kind of feeling. “High or low” may stand for the range of experiences a relationship could share, while “you never fell beneath me” suggests the speaker did not see the other person as inferior or beneath them.

The repeated admission, “I gave up on you, but I never forgot you,” holds two truths together: letting go is not the same as losing all feeling or memory. “Let it sleep” may mean leaving the painful history alone rather than reopening it. The lyrics do not explain exactly what happened, so the speaker’s withdrawal could be self-protection, acceptance, or both.
