Seven Spanish Angels

The lyrics tell a tragic story of two lovers facing armed pursuers. At first, the man asks the woman to pray for him, and she tries to comfort him with faith. After he is killed, she picks up his gun, knowing it is empty and that she cannot win. The mood shifts from courage and devotion to grief and fatal acceptance; the ending presents both lovers as dead and received into heaven.

The “Valley of the Gun” suggests a place ruled by violence, while the “Altar of the Sun” gives the scene a sacred, almost ceremonial quality. The seven angels praying for the couple make their earthly struggle seem witnessed by heaven. “Took another angel home” is a gentle, religious way to describe death: the lovers are imagined as joining the angels above.

The story leaves some details unclear, including why the couple is being pursued and what has happened before the song begins. The woman’s final action can be read as choosing death rather than living without her partner, though the lyrics do not explain her thoughts beyond her prayer and despair. The angels and heavenly thunder may express faith in an afterlife, or may offer poetic comfort in a violent ending.
