Spanish Harlem

The lyrics describe a rare, beautiful “rose” growing in an unexpected place. At first, it seems hidden and delicate, appearing by moonlight rather than in the sun. The mood then becomes more personal and romantic: the speaker imagines someone being captivated by the rose and caring for it. The repeated singing at the end keeps the feeling dreamy and affectionate.

The rose growing “right up through the concrete” suggests beauty or tenderness surviving in a hard environment. Its dark color and coal-black eyes make the image vivid, while the comparison to a person’s eyes connects the flower to a woman who attracts someone deeply. “Start a fire” is an idiom for stirring strong desire or emotion, and “pick that rose” may mean choosing her, though it also hints at taking something delicate from where it grew.

The lyrics do not fully explain whether the rose is meant to represent a particular woman, the neighborhood, or both. Calling it “special” and imagining it growing in a garden can suggest admiration and a wish to protect or nurture it. But the image of picking the flower also carries a small tension: caring for someone may be loving, while choosing to remove the rose from its original setting could be seen as possessive.
