Wrong Number

The lyrics present a speaker whose carefully imagined life has gone badly off course. At first, he sounds worried about someone who seems unlike herself; later, he describes being pulled into a troubling situation and ends up “down here for a while.” The mood shifts from anxious observation to dark, almost comic confusion, before the failed phone call leaves him disconnected.

The bright colors—lime green, tangerine, red, and gold—are described as “sickly” or “deep dark,” making vivid images feel threatening rather than cheerful. The snakes and the devil may suggest danger, temptation, or fears the speaker cannot quite explain. His “best laid plans” have fallen apart: he says they began in church but ended with Angelica, a contrast that hints at a move from innocence or order toward something more complicated. “Digging in the dirt” may also imply being stuck in a low place, though the lyrics play with the literal image of digging.

The song leaves much unclear: who Angelica is, what has happened to “her,” and whether the speaker’s images describe real events or a confused state of mind. The final “wrong number” could be an ordinary failed call, but it also echoes the larger feeling that the speaker cannot reach the person he is trying to contact—or make sense of his own situation.
