Road Of The Righteous

The lyrics describe a man trying to save his life and care for his family, apparently by stopping a damaging habit. His efforts bring some improvement, but the song says there is no complete cure. The mood combines respect for his struggle with sadness and a belief that he is not alone. The repeated chorus turns his experience into a wider reflection on people who keep trying to live rightly despite hardship.

“Put a plug in his jug” is an informal expression suggesting that he has stopped drinking alcohol. The “road of the righteous” presents a difficult effort to live well as a path with a moral purpose, while “this old lonely path” emphasizes how isolating it can feel. The lyrics also mention “pit-faults” and “cat-calls”: likely obstacles and mockery, though “pit-faults” may be a mistaken or playful form of “pitfalls.” “One shot” means that life is limited and precious.

The song’s message is encouraging, but not simply triumphant. It urges persistence and promises “treasures” to those who stay strong, yet the claim that there is “no blasted cure” complicates that hope. This may refer to the lasting nature of addiction or another serious struggle, but the lyrics do not specify. The repeated blessing for those who go their way could express admiration, grief, or both.
