Wishlist - Live

The speaker strings together wishes to become many different things and people. At first, the wishes suggest a desire to matter: to make a powerful impact, deliver a message, or be part of a shared moment. Later, the speaker imagines being close to someone and useful in everyday life. The repeated “I wish” gives the song a yearning, almost playful tone, but it also hints at restlessness or dissatisfaction with simply being oneself.

Several images mix the extraordinary with the ordinary. A “neutron bomb” suggests sudden, destructive power, while the hands raised toward the sky may evoke a crowd expressing hope, wonder, or need. In contrast, the Christmas-tree star, a souvenir holding a house key, and a car’s brake pedal are small objects tied to memory, home, or safety. The speaker also wishes to be “the verb to trust,” a metaphor for wanting to embody reliability rather than merely promise it.

The wishes do not all point in one direction: some seek attention or significance, while others seek intimacy and dependable service. The line about being “as fortunate as fortunate as me” may be sincere gratitude, ironic self-correction, or both. The song leaves open whether these wishes express loneliness, generosity, playful imagination, or a mixture of them.
