He stood six foot six, six foot six
He knew all the Creek and the Cherokee tricks
But he wouldn't sell, and he couldn't mix
Sam Houston was a mighty big man
Yeah, Sam was a mighty big man
Sam Houston was governor of Tennessee
When he heard the frontier call
He couldn't stand the crowded land
Tennessee was a-gettin' too small
So he packed his gear and saddled his horse
I said, "Sam, where you goin' to?"
"Well, I'm a-goin' out to Texas 'cause in Tennessee
I've done all about all I can do"
He stood six foot six, six foot six
He knew all the Creek and the Cherokee tricks
But he wouldn't sell, and he couldn't mix
Sam Houston was a mighty big man
Yeah, Sam was a mighty big man
Well, he went to Texas in troubled times
And he won a victory
Told Santa Ana, "Go back to Mexico
'Cause Texas wants to be free"
Well, he chased him across the San Jacinto River
Jeff Smith cut the bridge in two
Sam said, "Santa Ana, here's a treaty you'd better keep
Or I'll annex Old Mexico too", yeah
He stood six foot six, six foot six
He knew all the Creek and the Cherokee tricks
But he wouldn't sell, and he couldn't mix
Sam Houston was a mighty big man
Yeah, Sam was a mighty big man
Yeah, Sam was a mighty big man
Yeah, Sam was a mighty big man
Yeah
