Lyrics meaning
The speaker keeps buying lilacs, flowers associated in the song with a love that has ended. The mood moves from sadness and remembrance to a more resigned view: the relationship is gone, and time has changed what the speaker can feel. The repeated opening and closing lines make the loss seem like a lasting part of everyday life.
Several images connect love with flowers and growth. The speaker tries to “graft” his love of lilacs onto a woman, suggesting he hopes to make a new relationship carry the feelings he already has. But the flowers are scarce, and the image of lilacs dead in war gives absence a stark, almost literal shape. Later, time is compared to Attila, whose passing leaves a desert: this metaphor presents time as destructive rather than healing.
The song leaves some details open. The “beautiful woman” and the “fauvette” (a small songbird) may refer to the same beloved, or the bird may be a separate poetic image for someone who once brought music and joy. The line about flying away together hints at a shared moment of escape or happiness, but does not explain what ended the love. Lilacs therefore seem to hold both beauty and grief: they preserve a tender memory while reminding the speaker that it cannot simply bloom again.
