The speaker wants to spend time with someone he loves, but he feels unsure whether the other person feels the same. He waits for a chance to be alone together and rehearses what to say. “Stand in line” suggests waiting patiently for the other person’s attention. Calling “I love you” a “line” means it may sound like a familiar romantic phrase, perhaps something the listener has heard before; for the speaker, however, it is sincere. “Spoil it all” shows his fear that speaking honestly will disrupt the evening. The images of perfume filling his head and the night feeling blue suggest that attraction and strong emotion make the moment vivid, while “blue” may also hint at sadness or anxiety.

The song leaves the other person’s response unclear. Their eyes seem to show dislike for familiar romantic words, but that does not necessarily mean they reject the speaker himself. The speaker may be mistaken in thinking his confession has spoiled everything: the title’s “stupid” sounds self-critical, not proof that expressing love was actually wrong.
