Krabat

The song tells of someone drawn into a powerful master’s world, where magic and obedience seem to bind him. Yet he repeatedly escapes, at least briefly, to visit someone he loves. The mood shifts between fear of the master and the excitement and tenderness of secret meetings. By the end, the beloved appears to be searching for him, while he feels pulled back toward the master.

Raven feathers suggest transformation: the speaker gains the ability to fly unseen and cross boundaries, both literal and emotional. The feather he gives his beloved is a keepsake and a promise that he will return. The master’s voice, by contrast, represents a force that demands obedience; the repeated command to obey makes the speaker’s freedom feel fragile. The black book and the master’s unsettling gaze add to the sense that escape may be difficult.

The story can be read as a supernatural tale about a young person caught between a controlling power and love, but it also works as a metaphor for conflicting loyalties. The speaker’s visits are described as acts of rebellion, though the promise to return does not mean he can truly break free. It remains unclear whether the love will ultimately overcome the master’s hold, or whether the speaker is trapped in a cycle of escape and return.
