Wanderlust

The lyrics portray a lone gunman who keeps moving from town to town, refusing invitations to stay. At first, he sounds confident and treats each new challenger as another opponent to defeat. But the repeated drumbeat and thoughts of “judgment day” introduce a darker feeling: he seems to expect that his violent life will eventually catch up with him.

“Wanderlust branded deeper than the bone” suggests that his urge to travel is not a passing wish; it feels permanent and marked into his identity. Dust from many towns makes his wandering visible, while “sleep with one eye open” implies that he is always alert to danger and cannot truly rest. The drum may represent approaching death, punishment, or simply his growing awareness that his luck will run out.

The speaker describes himself as an outcast, but the lyrics leave open whether he values this freedom or is trapped by it. His claim that he cannot settle down may sound proud, yet the loneliness and expectation of a final reckoning hint at regret or fear. The song can therefore be read both as a dramatic portrait of a restless gunslinger and as a warning about a life built around violence.
