Lyrics meaning

The speaker feels unsettled as life keeps changing around him. He hopes the world will not โ€œturn away,โ€ suggesting a fear that change may leave him behind or make him feel ignored. He wants company, yet finds daily contact difficult. Later, he decides to leave town, so the song moves from anxious observation toward a desire to escape, without showing whether leaving will solve anything.

Several images make this unease concrete. Pictures falling from the wall suggest that familiar things, or the speakerโ€™s sense of stability, are coming loose. Being alone at a microphone during a radio interview turns a public appearance into a picture of isolation: he is expected to speak, but has no real connection with others. On the beach, the seagulls remain โ€œout of reach,โ€ which may suggest that even in a quieter place, the speaker cannot grasp the freedom or peace he wants.

The song holds two opposing feelings together: he needs a crowd, but cannot face people day to day. Calling his problems meaningless does not make them disappear, showing the difference between judging a problem and feeling it. โ€œGet out of townโ€ may be a practical plan, a wish to withdraw, or both. The beach and the road offer distance, but the repeated worry about the turning world suggests that escape may not remove his unease.
