Lyrics meaning
The speaker describes an intense, unequal bond: he works himself to exhaustion and obeys the other person, yet believes he can never be enough for them. His need for a lasting promise grows into a demand for a painful offering. The mood shifts from devotion and pleading to something darker and more controlling.
The โringfingerโ suggests commitment, perhaps a marriage promise, but the demand to โsever flesh and boneโ makes that promise sound extreme and bodily. โCarved in stoneโ means fixed and unbreakable, while โdeeper than the seaโ emphasizes how profound the speaker wants the bond to be. The image of being nailed up like Jesus connects his suffering to sacrifice, though he also seems to choose or accept that suffering.
The lyrics leave unclear whether the speaker is asking the other person to prove their love, trying to control them, or expressing how trapped he feels in the relationship. His claim that he gets what he wants by getting โpartโ of the other person suggests possession as well as intimacy. The religious language may make the relationship seem sacred to him, but the violent images complicate that idea: devotion here can look like both self-sacrifice and a demand for sacrifice from someone else.
