High Voltage

The speaker answers a series of questions about his appearance, lifestyle, and love of performing. Rather than explain himself in detail, he says that music gives him what he needs. The mood is lively and self-assured, building from a playful response to a repeated, energetic demand for rock ’n’ roll and audience participation.

“Plug me into high” compares the speaker to a device that needs electricity, suggesting that music energizes him. “High voltage” also conveys intensity and excitement; here, it appears to describe the thrilling effect of rock music, not necessarily literal electricity. The phrase “get my kicks” means to find enjoyment or excitement, so dancing, singing, and playing are presented as ways he gets pleasure from life.

The questions may imply that other people do not understand the speaker’s choices, but he does not seem troubled by their judgment. His repeated request for “high” is deliberately broad: it could mean a rush of energy, the emotional lift of music, or simply the heightened excitement of a performance. The lyrics leave the exact meaning open, while making clear that music is the central source of his enthusiasm.
