Something's Wrong With My Radio

The singer is excited for Friday night and wants lively rock music, but the radio seems to offer the opposite. Rather than letting this spoil the mood, the singer rejects the message to “slow down” and insists on going out and having fun. The feeling moves from irritation with the radio to playful defiance and confidence.

The radio can be read as a symbol of outside expectations: it tells the singer to be less energetic, while the singer chooses to “Go.” “Punch my card” means finishing a work shift, making the weekend excitement feel like a release from routine. The line about people staring suggests the singer knows this style or enthusiasm may seem unusual, but decides not to care.

The lyrics are humorous and exaggerated, so the radio’s failure may be literal—perhaps it cannot find the music the singer likes—or a comic way to complain that the world does not match the singer’s taste. “Long-haired music” seems to refer to a kind of music the singer finds unsuitable, though the exact meaning is not explained. Overall, the song celebrates personal preference and energy, without needing a deeper message: even when the radio disappoints, the singer can still choose to rock.
