I met Chris at the Golden Fleece
To have a nice meal and gamble a bit
I had the steak and he had the fish
Cause it's the only thing that he could keep in
He had a day in a hospital chair
With a brave face on said it wasn't so bad
With a brave face on a body too thin
Meal gone cold barely picking at it
Everyone knew that something weren't right
With the chemical glowing through his blood
Like a neon sign
It's a strange name for a watering hole
Said it right on the tin, you know what you're in for
The Golden Fleece not a promise they broke
Everyone here's being fleeced of their gold
We sat down at the pokie machine
So desperate kept throwing the fifties in
We both knew how much he needed the win
But even if he did like in the nineties
Crown Casino opening night
He rinsed the house and took the lot
It wouldn't make him alright
ย
Losing it's all that the bad luck starts
Like a mosquito keeps feeding on ya
The problems start small and then they get worse
Til even your own body's turning on ya
It started going wrong for my mother's twin
Fifteen years old and barely a man
Fifteen years old when his dad got sick
Didn't see him before his heart packed it in
They sent the kids in one at a time
He missed out couldn't say goodbye
He always brought it up
ย
I was online when the call came in
On the opposite side of the world to them
They told me that the time had come
They told me don't you worry son
He'll be okay said the words of a prayer
With the gold fleece on he's better off up there
With the gold fleece left his body for the air
And if I had that night over again
I'd make him laugh just one more time
For his missing tooth and worn out smile
Fifty's too young to fly
