Lyrics meaning
The lyrics present a speaker who wants to express what is deepest in him before he dies. He describes himself as sincere and connects his verses to the natural world. The mood is warm and thoughtful, but not entirely peaceful: the speaker also feels hurt and vulnerable. The repeated refrain gives the song a steady, almost songlike frame around these personal reflections.
Several images carry the meaning. The speakerโs โversesโ are both light green and bright crimson, suggesting freshness and strong feeling. He also compares a verse to a wounded deer seeking shelter, an image of pain and a wish for protection. The white rose stands for kindness or goodwill: he offers it to a sincere friend, but also to someone cruel who has hurt him. โThistlesโ and โnettles,โ by contrast, suggest bitterness and harm.
The rose offered to the cruel person may express forgiveness, self-control, or a refusal to answer injury with injury. Yet the lyrics do not say that the hurt has disappeared; the wounded-deer image keeps pain present. The song can therefore be heard as a hopeful choice to remain generous without pretending that cruelty is harmless. The refrain itself is more like a recurring musical call than part of this message.
