Lyrics meaning

The song portrays Martin as a poor farm worker whose life is defined by exhausting labor. He works from dawn to sunset, in every place and kind of weather, yet seems to accept his hardship quietly. The repeated refrain expresses pity for him, while the ending shifts from the rhythm of work to death: Martin lies beneath the earth he spent his life digging.

The spade and the repeated digging are central images. “Creuse la terre, creuse le temps” links turning soil with the slow passing of a lifetime: Martin seems to dig not only fields but also his way through time. The “last field” is a metaphor for his grave, and the fact that he digs it himself makes his death feel like the final task in a life of labor. His hurry and secrecy suggest he wants to avoid troubling anyone, even at the end.

The song can be heard as a compassionate portrait of someone who bears poverty without showing envy or bitterness. But its calm, almost matter-of-fact tone may also carry quiet irony: Martin’s self-effacement is so complete that he tries not to inconvenience others even by dying. The lyrics leave open whether to see him mainly as humble and courageous, or as a tragic figure worn down by a life with little room for himself.
