The Wind

The speaker is searching for direction and listening inwardly, while admitting that the future is uncertain. The lyrics move between humility and confidence: only God may know where the speaker will end up, yet music can carry the speaker toward what the heart wants. The repeated promises at the end suggest a determination not to repeat a painful mistake.

“The wind of my soul” presents inner feeling as something moving and difficult to control, like the wind. “My words … fall far below” may mean that spoken language cannot express what the speaker truly feels. By contrast, music seems to reach deeper and guide the speaker. The striking images of sitting on the setting sun and swimming in the devil’s lake sound impossible or dangerous; they may suggest extreme experiences, rather than literal events.

The song leaves the speaker’s journey unexplained. “Only God really knows” could express faith, uncertainty, or both, while the claim never to have wanted water is puzzling and may be deliberately symbolic. The lyrics do not tell us exactly what mistake the speaker means, either. Their repeated “never” sounds firm, but the surrounding uncertainty keeps the feeling from being simply triumphant: the speaker is trying to trust an inner direction while knowing the destination is unknown.
