Naked in the Rain

The speaker feels uncomfortable with human society, describing people as cold, mean, and unsettling. They imagine escaping to the jungle and living among animals instead. As the song develops, this escape becomes joyful and playful: the speaker runs through the woods, swims, and feels openly in love with the wilderness.

“Naked in the rain” suggests freedom from social rules and self-consciousness, not necessarily a literal message about clothing. The animals represent a kind of companionship the speaker finds easier and more comforting than human contact. Asking Doctor Dolittle for his “secret” playfully suggests a wish to communicate with animals; the repeated request sounds both humorous and earnest.

The song can be read as a celebration of nature and a rejection of social expectations, but its exaggerated images also give it a dreamlike, comic quality. The speaker’s dislike of people may be sincere, or it may be a playful way to express the desire to get away from everyday pressures. The lyrics do not explain exactly what has made human society feel so alienating, so the escape can remain a fantasy of freedom rather than a specific plan.
