It was Christmas, in Newport city
There was ice on the Jefferson highway
Thanksgiving had come
And gone with the sun
As the snow set down for the holiday
ย
We sat down at Ruble's for whiskey
And to share what their might be for company
The wind through the door
Blew the rugs on the floor
And an old man laughed
As he shook off his hat
In the doorway
ย
And the snow is swirling around
And the world is upside down
Hey boys, we're getting in deep
While the world is asleep
ย
The station on the old road was open
In case a traveler, happened to get over
That old mountain pass
Would be just like glass
Up high where the starlight is frozen
ย
The man on the inside was friendly
And we talked for awhile over coffee
He said it's too far to hike
There'll be no rides tonight
So why not stay on
At least until dawn
But I'd made up my mind
And I knew it was time
I'd done all my talkin'
So I set out a walkin'
I've got people way up in
Who would see me again
And I could be there by morning
It's where I was born
On a night, just as white
And dreamy
ย
And the snow is swirling around
And the world is upside down
Hey boys, we're getting in deep
While the world is asleep
