Breaking rocks out here on the chain gang
Breaking rocks and serving my time
Breaking up big rocks out here on the chain gang
'Cause I've been convicted of a crime
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
There! I reckon that ought to get it
I've been working, yes, working
But I still got so terrible long to go
Lord, I got tired of being mad and hungry
And I got tired of being sad and poor
And I needed myself some money
So I thought I'd rob me a store
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
Woah, I reckon that ought to get it
I've been working, yes, working
But I still got so terrible long to go
Now I went in as quiet as a church mouse
'Cause I went in through the back door
But I had to leave the grocer man bleeding
When he caught me robbing his store
You gotta hold it steady, hold it steady right there while I hit it
Oh yes, reckon that's gon' have to get it
I've been working, yes, working
But I still got so terrible long to go
But then I walked out with a whole lot of money
And my heart was filled with joy
'Til I felt somebody grab me in my collar
When I turned around I saw that it was the do-right boy
You gotta hold it steady, hold it steady right there while I hit it
There, reckon that's gon' have to get it
I've been working, and I'm still working
'Cause I sure got a terrible long to go
If the judge says one year hard labor
Then it's one year I'm gonna do
But I heard the judge say twelve years hard labor, oh Lord
I heard my woman scream "Lord, Lordy no!"
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
There, reckon that's gonna have to get it
I've been working, yes, working
But I still got so terrible long to go
I wanna see my sweet honey baby
I wanna break these chains off and run
I wanna lay my head somewhere down in the shade
'Cause Lord it sure is hot out here in the sun
You gotta hold it, hold it steady right there while I hit it
Oh Lord, I reckon that's gonna have to get it
I've been working, and I'm still working
But I still got so terrible long to go
Yes, I've been working, yes, working
But I still got so terrible long to go
Too long, too long to go
Keep on working, keep on working
