Lyrics meaning

The lyrics tell a playful story about three young men who see three women walking by and quickly become infatuated. At first, the men boast about how โ€œsharpโ€ and โ€œcoolโ€ they are. Their confidence turns into excitement and romantic interest, but the ending gently punctures their self-image: the women have made them โ€œfools.โ€ The mood stays light and teasing rather than sad or serious.

Several details create the songโ€™s casual, comic feel. The men arrive in a โ€œbeat up car,โ€ an old, worn-out vehicle that contrasts with their proud talk about being cool. The womenโ€™s โ€œswinging their hipsโ€ and sharing potato chips give the scene an ordinary, lively quality. Saying the women made the men โ€œfoolsโ€ suggests that the men are so taken with them that they lose their usual confidence or composure; it need not mean the women deliberately tricked them.

The songโ€™s attitude toward romance is amused but not entirely mocking. The men speak possessively about which woman each wants, yet the lyrics also say they โ€œfell in love,โ€ exaggerating a sudden attraction for comic effect. โ€œCoolโ€ is repeated so often that it starts to sound playful, as though the song is poking fun at the menโ€™s self-image. The women remain mostly mysterious: we see them through the menโ€™s fascinated reaction, so it is unclear how they feel about the attention.
