“Heroes”

The lyrics describe two lovers who imagine themselves as powerful and free, even though forces around them threaten to keep them apart. Their confidence rises and falls: they claim they can overcome opposition, but the repeated wish to be heroes “just for one day” suggests that their victory may be temporary. The mood moves between defiance, tenderness, and awareness of danger.

The lovers becoming “king” and “queen” is an image of imagined importance: for a moment, they can feel in control of their lives. “Steal time” suggests taking a brief moment of happiness from circumstances that do not allow them to stay together. Later, the memory of standing by a wall while guns fire overhead makes their kiss feel courageous, as if affection briefly matters more than fear.

The lyrics leave open whether the lovers truly defeat the forces against them or only find a short refuge from them. “For ever and ever” sounds hopeful, but it sits beside the repeated limit “just for one day” and the statement that nothing will keep them together. The song can therefore be heard as both a celebration of courage and a bittersweet recognition that a moment of freedom may not change the larger situation.
