Alt wie ein Baum

The speaker wishes to grow old like a tree, imagining a life that is long, steady, and useful to others. The mood is hopeful and reflective: the repeated wish suggests a strong personal dream, while the chorus expresses a sense of belonging in the world, between the sky and the earth.

The tree’s broad crown reaching over fields suggests growth and presence that can be seen from far away. Its roots, which no storm can defeat, stand for resilience and stability. The tree also gives shade to children year after year, an image of care that lasts across generations. Together, these details make “being old like a tree” mean more than simply living a long time.

The wish may be about becoming strong and dependable, or about leaving something good behind for others. “Between heaven and earth” can suggest balance between lofty dreams and ordinary life, though it could also simply express a feeling of being fully alive in the world. The lyrics do not spell out one exact meaning; their simple, repeated images leave room for listeners to connect the tree with their own hopes.
