Come Sail Away

The song begins with a speaker choosing to leave and face an uncertain future. Sailing represents freedom and a fresh start, but the mood also carries sadness: looking at the sea brings back memories of childhood friends and shared dreams. The speaker recognizes that life did not turn out as happily as the old story promised, yet still wants to keep going.

The “open course” suggests a journey without a fixed destination, while “search for tomorrow” expresses hope for something better. The “pot of gold” is an image of success or happiness that the friends expected but never found. “Carry on” means to continue despite disappointment, and it gives the song’s hopeful words a note of effort rather than certainty.

Near the end, the story shifts suddenly: figures the speaker believes are angels turn out to be travelers on a starship. This can be read as a literal science-fiction twist, or as a dreamlike escape from ordinary life. The invitation to sail away sounds joyful, but it also leaves an open question: is the speaker finding a new beginning, or leaving behind a world that has disappointed them? The lyrics allow both readings.
