Lyrics meaning

The lyrics portray a struggle between people and a world increasingly controlled by machines. At first, the speaker insists that machines cannot erase his humanity, even as they seem to wear him down. The repeated return to โ€œBack to humansโ€ sounds like a hopeful demand, but the songโ€™s ending circles back to the โ€œmachine world,โ€ leaving the outcome unresolved.

Several images make technology feel physical and threatening: the machines โ€œfreeze,โ€ โ€œburn,โ€ and โ€œsqueezeโ€ the speaker, as though industrial equipment were attacking him. โ€œSmoke-blackened pistons of steelโ€ suggests a harsh, dirty mechanical environment, while โ€œno one can wrest me awayโ€ expresses a determination to keep hold of his human self. Later, the list of software, hardware, memory, and data mixes technical language with ordinary or intimate ideas, making the machine seem to occupy every part of life.

The lyrics also complicate the contrast between humans and machines. The description of โ€œhumansโ€ as having no troubles, never crying, and never retreating sounds strangely perfect and emotionlessโ€”almost machine-like. Meanwhile, the speakerโ€™s distress is evidence of feeling, but it may also suggest how exhausting modern life has become. The titleโ€™s alternative phrase, โ€œBack to Humans,โ€ points toward a desire to recover human connection, though the song does not make clear whether that return is possible or whether people are already becoming like the systems they oppose.
