Lyrics

Lyrics meaning

The singer feels caught between staying with someone he loves and the pressure of that personโ€™s family, who seem to disapprove of him. He fears losing the relationship, but also fears trouble with the law if he ignores the familyโ€™s wishes. His feelings move from hurt and uncertainty to increasingly urgent desperation; he keeps asking what he should do, without finding an answer.

The repeated image of being โ€œin a cageโ€ makes his lack of freedom feel vivid: he is emotionally stuck, unable to see a way forward. โ€œThe hands of the lawโ€ suggests possible legal consequences, though the lyrics do not explain exactly what the family might report or why. The claim that he could support his partner and settle down may be his response to doubts about his suitability, especially doubts about money or commitment.

The song can be heard as a plea for the loved one to choose the relationship rather than let family pressure divide them. Yet the singerโ€™s view is the only one we hear, so we cannot know whether the familyโ€™s concerns are unfair or based on something the lyrics leave out. His repeated declarations of love make the emotion clear, but they do not resolve the conflictโ€”or show whether either person is truly free to decide.
