One morning, Miguel and I
Set to leave for a job
The company sprinter van
When he turned off the radio
Put his forehead into his hand
We sat briefly in the quiet
Of the ticking hazard lights
'Til I said, "Man, are you alright?"
And he replied
"You know, I'm only passing through
This job's not what I'm supposed to do
It just pays the rent and fills the fridge
While I plan my next move
But the months turn into years
And the paychecks disappear
And I'm stuck here with you
But I'm only passing through"
Nina's my companion now
She has been 'bout a year
We met online, went out two times
And now we're laying here
Reading emails side by side
What a gift to be alive
I smile as she catches my eye
But in my mind
I know I'm only passing through
There's better love for me than you
It keeps me warm but my heart's on
The hunt for somebody new
But the months turn into years
And the words ring in my ears
I'm stuck here with you
But I'm only passing through
My dad, he was a tricky man
Then maybe, so am I
Some love's real tough to understand
And we never thought to try
'Til the sickness came on slow
And the next thing that I know
I'm kneeling by his side saying goodbye
And he's like
"You know, I'm only passing through
Dying's what I was born to do
So dry your tears and while you're at it
Fluff my pillow too
My body's failing me
And sleep's my one relief
And I'm stuck here with you
I'm only passing through
I'm stuck here with you
I'm only passing through"
