Lyrics meaning

The lyrics tell a small animalโ€™s nighttime adventure from its own point of view. It starts by seeking warmth and food, then turns into a frantic escape when people and a cat discover it. The mood shifts from cozy and curious to tense, then briefly triumphant as the mouse seems to gain the run of the house. The ending adds a sudden, comic reversal.

Several images make the danger vivid. The mouse is โ€œblind as a mole in coalโ€ when the light comes on: it cannot see clearly and feels helpless. โ€œTheyโ€™ve blocked off my doorโ€ means its usual escape route is cut off. The phrase โ€œthe run of the houseโ€ suggests freedom to roam, but this confidence is short-lived when the cat appears. The raised paw and โ€œfinal pounceโ€ make the cat seem like an unavoidable threat.

The last lines are deliberately ambiguous and playful. The story first presents the mouse as a tiny hero facing enormous enemies, then abruptly switches to someone imagining a โ€œmonster mouseโ€ ten feet tall. This may be a dream, a frightened personโ€™s exaggerated view, or a comic reversal in which the mouse seems powerful after all. The lyrics do not settle on one explanation, so the ending can be read as either a joke or a shift in perspective.
