Lyrics meaning
The speaker describes being treated as a public spectacle and blamed or mocked by others. She pushes back against their claims that they feel sorry for her, insisting that their actions helped create her anger. The emotion develops from wounded defiance into a fierce challenge: she presents herself as someone others should fear, while also revealing how deeply she has been hurt.
Several images make this accusation vivid. “Leaping from the gallows” suggests escaping a punishment or expected downfall, while levitating down the street gives her entrance a dramatic, almost supernatural quality. The “circus life” portrays her as an entertainer watched and judged by a crowd; saying her teeth were taken out implies that others tried to make her harmless. The repeated question, “Who’s afraid of little old me?”, sounds sarcastic: “little old” makes her seem harmless, but she uses that impression to challenge her audience.
The lyrics leave room for more than one reading. The speaker may be warning people who harmed her, but she also seems to be questioning whether every injury was deliberate: “But what if they did?” Her fierce persona can be understood as both a form of power and a response to being controlled. By saying others “trained” her, she argues that their treatment shaped her behavior, without making entirely clear how much responsibility she still claims for it.
