Unanswered Prayers

The song’s speaker meets a woman he once deeply wanted and remembers praying that she would become his. Seeing her again as an adult changes his view: the old romance no longer feels like the perfect love he imagined. He leaves the encounter grateful for his present life and especially for his wife. The emotion moves from nostalgia and curiosity to relief and gratitude.

“Old high school flame” means a past romantic interest; “flame” suggests strong attraction. The “man upstairs” is an informal way to refer to God, and “unanswered prayers” are wishes that were not granted.
